एक छोटे से गाँव में मोहन नाम का एक गरीब लेकिन दयालु लड़का रहता था। एक दिन खेत से घर लौटते समय उसे रास्ते के किनारे एक छोटी-सी चिड़िया मिली। वह उड़ नहीं पा रही थी।
मोहन ने उसे धीरे से उठाया और अपने घर ले आया। उसने चिड़िया के लिए एक छोटी टोकरी में कपड़ा बिछाया और उसके सामने पानी और दाने रख दिए। अगले कई दिनों तक मोहन उसकी देखभाल करता रहा।
कुछ दिनों बाद चिड़िया ठीक हो गई। मोहन ने उसे खुले आसमान में छोड़ दिया। चिड़िया उड़कर पेड़ पर गई और फिर वापस मोहन के पास आकर कुछ देर बैठी।
मोहन मुस्कुराया और बोला, “जा... अब तू आज़ाद है।”
कुछ दिन बाद मोहन खेत में काम कर रहा था। तभी वही चिड़िया उसके पास आई और जोर-जोर से चहचहाने लगी। मोहन उसके पीछे-पीछे चला।
चिड़िया उसे खेत के एक कोने तक ले गई, जहाँ उसकी माँ का पर्स पड़ा था, जो रास्ते में कहीं गिर गया था।
मोहन ने पर्स उठाकर अपनी माँ को दे दिया। उसकी माँ बहुत खुश हुई।
उस दिन मोहन समझ गया कि हम किसी की मदद करते हैं, तो उसका बदला तुरंत मिले, यह जरूरी नहीं। लेकिन अच्छाई कभी बेकार नहीं जाती।
